Exercise 9 - Navigating using all available techniques



Exercise summary

Student to … ‘Make safe passage from Suzy Bay Marina to Walton Harbour via Synka Sound. A warning of GNSS interference in the vicinity of Huckle Head has been heard. Use all available techniques to navigate safely using radar.’

Previous knowledge, understanding or skills

Has successfully completed all previous exercises.


Aim

To bring together all the lessons learnt from the previous exercises to allow the student to evidence that they have developed the competencies needed to set-up and utilise the features of a radar to best effect.


Desired learning outcomes

Student demonstrates an appropriate level of capability when using the radar and so reaches the standard to be awarded the RYA Radar Course completion certificate.


Session running order

This exercise seeks to bring together all of the techniques introduced during the exercises already completed.

 

During the exercise the instructor should expect to see the student:


  1. Setting up the radar prior to departure.
  1. Monitoring and adjusting radar settings whilst on passage.
  1. Alternating their view between window, radar and chartplotter.
  2. Using VRMs, EBLs, PIs and depth for navigation and position monitoring.
  1.  Reacting to a loss of GNSS and being able to fix position using techniques appropriate the area they are in when GNSS is lost.
  1. Applying the collision regulations correctly both when vessels are in sight of one another and when Rule 19 becomes applicable.
  1. Successfully reaching their destination.
