Student to… ‘Execute the same passage starting in the channel to the west of ‘Plover Island’ to ‘Leslie Head’. However, during this passage the visibility will markedly deteriorate. As visibility reduces you will need to use the radar skills developed in Exercise 3 to complete the passage safely.’
20 minutes
Has evidenced during Exercise 3 an understanding of how to optimise the radar for collision avoidance.
To demonstrate their ability to utilise the radar for collision avoidance in restricted visibility and then take appropriate avoiding action applying Rule 19 correctly.
Can apply all of the lessons so far to effectively monitor other vessels and then act as required according to the collision regulations.
Instructor to try to provide little guidance to the student but prompt improvement in what they are doing as necessary.
As collision situations evolve instructor to monitor student reactions and ensure appropriate application of Rule 19 occurs.
Note: This exercise introduces practical application of Rule 19 so its important that the theory to this is appropriately addressed before the passage commences.
As per Exercise 2 the exercise is conducted in restricted visibility so it is important that the student operates the vessel at a safe speed.
