Student to … ‘Execute a passage from the west of ‘Pool Point’ on ‘Swifta Island’ to the NW through Synka Sound passing to the west of ‘Nera Island’. Use single and dual VRMs to maintain a safe distance from shore. As you reach ‘Torre Point’ switch to using use offset VRMs to maintain a safe distance off.’
Has completed Exercise 5 and so has the ability to set up and adjust VRMs.
To develop the ability to use single and dual VRMs for navigation as a means to maintain a defined distance from charted features.
Can set up and adjust VRMs and choose appropriate features to utilise VRMs with.
Can use a single VRM to navigate with. Understands the benefit of using dual VRMs and can set these up to navigate along a coast maintaining a distance off between the two VRMs.
Can position a VRM offset from the vessel to navigate with and understands the benefits and disadvantages of doing so.
Before proceeding student to set-up radar and also a single VRM.
Student to determine an appropriate distance to hold off the north east of South Falls. Then as vessel progresses an appropriate distance off the edge of Synka Island.
A second VRM can then be introduced to determine the arrival at a suitable turn point south of Nera Island to then head up the west of Nera Island.
For this stage of the passage use dual VRMs to allow the shore of Nera Island to run between the two VRMs.
As the vessel reaches ‘Claw Point’ stop the vessel and offset a VRM to lay the offset EBL between Claw Point and Little Rees Island.
