Exercise summary
Student to … ‘Execute a passage from the east of ‘Swifta Island’ heading to the NE leaving ‘Synka Island’ to your port. Use parallel index lines to stay a safe distance off the island until you clear ‘Calf of Synka’.

Previous knowledge, understanding or skills
Has completed Exercise 6 so understands how to use VRMs to assist with navigation and holding a distance off a coast.
Aim
To evolve the understanding of VRMs to apply this knowledge to use Parallel Index lines.
Desired learning outcomes
To ensure student understands how to set-up and use PIs and the benefits of PIs vs VRMs.
Student to appreciate that PI lines are not a feature on most radar displays in the small boat sector.
Session running order
Student to set up radar as per previous exercises and then determine a preferred distance to hold off a line drawn between ‘Huckle Head’ and ‘Leslie Head’.
Student to set up parallel index line to hold off this line at pre-determined distance.
As vessel approaches Leslie Head student to align second PI onto ‘Rods Skerry’ isolated danger to head due north using Rods Skerry as a reference
