The link below allows you to download a Powerpoint presentation for you to use at your training centre to support the RYA Radar Courses that you run.

We have created this presentation as feedback from instructors has indicated some challenges in transitioning from their existing RYA Radar Course to their updated version based around the new simulator and the exercises contained in it. The challenge has been that the temptation has been to insert the exercises into their legacy presentation. The problem with this is that prior to the availability of the new simulator the courses run seemed to have got very theory heavy leaving very little time to add in these new exercises.
So… with the advent of the new simulator we suggest you go back and start again by creating a new presentation to sit at the heart of the way that you deliver the course. To help with this we’ve created a template presentation that contains placeholders for each of the exercises. You will see that on the page prior to each of these exercise placeholders we’ve listed the subjects that we think that should or could be covered ahead of that exercise. In some cases these are ‘must do’s’ insofar as you need to teach the theory before the student practically uses the feature (eg how a VRM works, the pros and cons of using VRMs and how to use it for navigation have to occur in the session just prior to the relevant exercise) whereas some syllabus items could be dropped in at many stages during the day.
What this presentation template doesn’t include is imagery or the detail of what you need to teach as that’s for the school/their instructors to agree on and create. A really key point though is don’t overteach the theory. The course should be all about the skills and knowledge needed to actually use the radar for navigation and collision avoidance. A deep dive into theory serves students no benefit and dilutes their ability to learn the important stuff - often ‘less is more’!
